Unmasking the 'Maskne'

If you are suffering from an increased number of spots and congestion on your chin and along your jawline, you're not alone.

“Maskne”(aka mask acne) has become a common skin complaint clients have been messaging me about.

Not only is the skin becoming more spotty in the area - but the masks are also causing chaffing and irritation which can at times be quite painful.

Why does 'maskne' happen?

Acne Mechanica is caused by friction, heat and or pressure - this, in turn, can cause an increase in oil production, breakouts and blackheads.

Because the masks can irritate the skin I am finding clients are experiencing this skin condition. Even more so if they are prone to breakouts! This is because having a face covering will amplify anything naturally happening in the skin.

As the skin temperature increases with your breath, so does circulation and sweating, and it is this combination of friction and heat that means accelerated oil and cell production causing congestion and clogging.

This enviroment under the mask is an ideal breeding ground for Cuibacterium Acne

- formerly Propionibacterium Acne (the bacteria that is associated with an inflamed and infected appearance of acne.

Clients have noticed that initially, their skin feels rough then it starts to feel bumpy. They then start to develop a mix of blackheads, raised papules and painful lesions.

What you can do to prevent maskne

There's a few ways you can reduce the risk of developing maskne:

  • Wear a clean mask (if using reusable masks wash and allow to dry completely)

  • Give the skin regular breaks from being covered - if not needed don't wear one.

  • Avoid wearing make-up underneath the covering

  • Embark on a good home skincare routine - ensuring the area is being cleaned well to remove oil, dirt and bacteria - the skin is well-exfoliated to prevent a buildup of dead cells - and the skin is nourished and soothed.
